Cameroon: Chantal, Brenda Biya summoned in California court

Brenda and Chantal Biya
Brenda Biya, daughter of President Biya and first lady Chantal of Cameroon, has been summoned before a California judge on June 1 over violent conduct in her Los Angelis apartment.

The incident, which led to Police being called to the scene, was occasioned by the impromptu visit of the First Lady, Chantal Biya, when she learnt the daughter was acting unusual in Los Angelis. She had flown in to California from Cameroon upon hearing of her daughter’s escapades in California. Brenda has been a source of embarrassment to the first couple of Cameroon.

It is believed that she heavily indulges in drugs. It was gathered that on arrival in California – just before last week’s 20th May celebrations in Yaounde, Chantal came with instructions from President Biya to get Brenda out of California and the United States. But when the mother told her this, she flew into a rage and started breaking things in the house.

Brenda then picked up a knife and started threatening Chantal with it.  Chantal reportedly called for help, but before help could come, neighbours who heard the commotion in Brenda’s apartment called the Los Angelis police who arrived the scene and caught Brenda still brandishing the knife, and she was arrested.

In the United States, wielding a knife in a threatening manner is a felony and could earn Brenda some jail time if convicted.

Nadal Pulls Out Of French Open With Wrist Injury

Nine-time French Open champion, Rafael Nadal unexpectedly pulled out of the French Open on Friday because of a left wrist injury.

"I have a problem with my wrist. Yesterday I played with an injection. I could play, but yesterday night I started to feel more and more pain," the Spanish left-hander told reporters in a hurriedly arranged news conference at Roland Garros.

"Today I felt I could not move my wrist," added the dejected Spaniard, who showed no signs of the injury during his 6-3 6-0 6-3 second round win over Facundo Bagnis on Thursday.

This is the latest setback the 29-year-old Spaniard has suffered in an injury-plagued career. Tendinitis in his knees prevented him from defending his Wimbledon title in 2009, while the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medallist also missed the 2012 London Games because of injury.

Cameroon: Condom Discovered Inside Woman's Appendix After She Swallowed It Two Weeks Earlier

A 26-year-old woman from Cameroon has had a condom surgically removed from her appendix, after swallowing it while performing oral sex on her boyfriend two weeks earlier.
According to report author Doctor Carlson B. Sama, from the surgery department at Cameroon's University of Buea, the woman came into the clinic complaining of pain and tenderness in her lower abdomen.

As reported in the journal, the pain had been increasing for a few days and conventional painkillers had had no effect. Suspecting appendicitis, the doctors conducted an ultrasound scan which revealed a swollen appendix and fluid build-up.

An emergency surgery began, and surgeons successfully removed the appendix with no complications. However, doctors said the organ felt unusual, and after dissecting it to find out more, they were surprised to find pieces of a condom.

Although doctors didn't believe she had eaten any foreign bodies before the operation, she revealed after the procedure that she remembered accidentally swallowing the condom while performing oral sex on her boyfriend two weeks before.

She didn't mention this to the doctors, because she said she passed out parts of the condom around five days after swallowing it.

Greenpeace Denounces Cameroon For Exporting 'Stolen' Timber

Greenpeace on Thursday condemned the sale of illegally logged timber from Cameroon, saying the West African country's main log exporter was involved in the trade.

A Greenpeace statement said the Cameroonian log exporter CCT sourced timber from La Socamba, a company logging several kilometres (miles) outside its designated area, and then sold it in Europe and China.

"Greenpeace Africa takes note of the audit of CCT's practices -– but stresses that this process should be independent and transparent, and that CCT suppliers are properly sanctioned when illegal activities are confirmed," said Eric Ini, Greenpeace Africa forest campaigner.

Cameroon: Government Cuts Imports to Boost Local Industries

Customers who want to sweeten their coffee may be out of luck at Kum Jeanette's restaurant in Yaounde. Sugar is in short supply these days in Cameroon, as the government cracks down on illegal imports to protect and promote local industry.

"For several weeks now, I have been going round looking for sugar,” Kum said. “It is scarce in town and, when you see it, the price is high. We used to buy for 700 [CFA, or $1.20] but now that we do not even see it, when you manage to see it you buy for 1,000 francs [$1.71] per packet."

Cameroon produces less than 120,000 tons of sugar each year. Local demand stands at 200,000 tons.

Donald Trump Displays Ignorance, Seeks Tweets Over Solutions: Barack Obama

US President Barack Obama disparaged US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Thursday, saying the billionaire seeks tweets over solutions and has "rattled" foreign leaders with his pronouncements.

Obama accused the real estate mogul and former reality TV impresario of making cavalier comments for provocative effect, and he urged all presidential candidates to take the high road in a boisterous and harsh campaign.

Obama said fellow leaders from the Group of Seven nations "are surprised by the Republican nominee. For good reason, because a lot of the proposals he has made display either ignorance of world affairs or a cavalier attitude, or an interest in getting tweets and headlines, instead of actually thinking through what it is that is required to keep America safe, secure and prosperous and the world on an even keel."

World War II Submarine Found With 71 Dead Bodies

A long lost British Second World War submarine that vanished 73 years ago has been found with 71 dead bodies of crew off the coast of Italy. The 1,290 tonne vessel was found by a diving team at a depth of 100 metres, close to the island of Tavolara, off the northeast coast of Sardinia. The submarine vanished without a trace around Janaury 2, 1943 and is believed was hit by a mine in the Gulf of Olbia.

"Immediately I thought of the destiny of the men who met their deaths down there. It was a fate shared by so many men, submariners in particular, fighting on all both sides of the conflict," diving team leader Massimo Domenico Bordone told Italian media.

The submarine had left Malta on December 28, 1942 for its first mission to destroy two Italian battleships when they lay anchor at the port of La Maddalena. But after sending a signal on December 31 the vessel disappeared without a trace. Military officials assumed the submarine had been sunk, 'Daily Express' reported.

Cameroon Cocoa Prices Rise After Months Of Stagnation

Cameroon cocoa prices rose across all regions in May, ending months of price stagnation as increased investment began to pay off, producers said.

Prices ranged from FCFA 1300 ($2.22) in the eastern region to FCFA 1650 in the center of the country, a slight increase on April, they said.

Prices have remained largely stagnant since the beginning of the year, but an investment of 40 million CFA francs since January from the Inter-professional Cocoa and Coffee Council has helped boost crop quality.

"In recent months, cocoa quality has improved thanks to the support program," said Maximilien Ongolo, a coffee producer in Monatele, in the central region.

Cameroon: CAMIFF Promotes Marketing Of Cameroonian Movies

The first edition of the Cameroon Film Festival, CAMIFF, ended recently in Buea.

The maiden Cameroon International Film Festival, CAMIFF), held recently for six days in Buea, gathering filmmakers, actors, script writers, cinematographers, sound engineers, editors and light engineers from Cameroon, India, Angola and America. The festival was geared at training and empowering Cameroonian filmmakers by giving them the opportunity to network with international colleagues.

According to CAMIF’s Chief Executive Officer, Agbor Gilbert, the Cameroon film industry is ready for international film festivals because stakeholders have been working hard and it was time the network looked for marketing opportunities abroad. He added that CAMIFF serves as bridge between filmmakers and content buyers. Speaking at a press conference in Mountain Hotel, Buea, the CAMIF CEO appealed to government to partner with the local film industry by allocating land for the construction of a film village.

He also called on government to take action against cable operators who promote the piracy of movies. Agbor Gilbert solicited the support of journalists to project Cameroonian actors and State subventions to support the film industry. CAMIFF Ambassador and Nollywood star, Ramsey Noah, said film actors and makers need not compromise, explaining that it is viewers who determine what is good enough and what is not.

5 Year-Old Girl Kills Self While Playing With Dad's Gun In US

In a tragic incident, a five-year- old girl in the US has accidentally shot herself dead while playing with her father's handgun in Lousiana, media reports said today.

The girl, Haley Moore, was spending the weekend at her father's house with her elder sister and brother. Just before they were about to leave for a movie, she found her father's gun at the house and began playing with the firearm.

Her father told investigators that Moore was playing with the gun when she shot herself inside the home in Lousiana's LaPlace area yesterday, New York Daily News reported.

The father was taking a shower when he heard a gunshot. He rushed to the spot and discovered that his daughter had accidentally shot herself, investigators said.

Authorities said the handgun had not been safely stored before the shooting occurred. Her father had left the .45-caliber gun on the table.
